Training & the Workforce Investment Act
(WIA)
The Federal Workforce Investment ACT (WIA) offers a comprehensive range of workforce development activities through statewide and
local organizations. Available workforce development activities provided in local communities can benefit job seekers, laid off workers, youth, incumbent workers, new entrants to the workforce, veterans, persons with disabilities, and employers.
The purpose of these activities is to promote an increase in the employment, job retention, earnings, and occupational skills improvement by participants. This, in turn, improves the quality of the workforce, reduces welfare dependency, and improves the productivity competitiveness of the nation.
| One-Stop centers use varied strategies in providing the appropriate services to meet the needs of their customers: |
- Core, Intensive and Training Services.
- WIA’s philosophy is “WORK FIRST”, followed by assistance in acquiring occupational skills upgrading, where necessary.
- Job Search Assistance.
- Career Counseling.
- Assistance with resumes, cover letters, job applications, and interview coaching.
- Skill assessment and development options.

| Before being considered for
classroom training you must first: |
- Actively look for a job.
- Be determined eligible for WIA.
- Work with a counselor to develop a long-term employment plan.
- Invest your time to improve your basic skills (if necessary).
- Pursue a career that is IN DEMAND in the
Greenville Region.
- Exhaust all other possible funding.

Perhaps On-The-Job Training would suit you best:
On-The-Job Training - This program places a participant with an employer for up to four hundred hours, depending on the skill level of the occupation. The employer is reimbursed fifty percent of the hourly wage agreed by contract to train the participant in the occupation for a full time permanent position.
